Glossary of Wireless Terms

1XRTT
The 3G technology that is commercially available and provides transfer rates of 144 Kbps for packet data and an average throughput range of 60 -90 Kbps on busy networks.

Bluetooth
A short-range wireless communications standard that operates using Frequency Hopping Spread System (FHSS). Based on the radio frequency transmission, it supports data transmission between computers, printers, and other Bluetooth enabled devices.

CDPD - Cellular Digital Packet Data
An IP network that runs at 19.2 Kbps with throughputs typically less than 10 Kbps. This first generation technology is being phased out by faster systems.

CDMA - Code Division Multiple Access
A digital wireless technology that works by converting speech into digital information which then gets transmitted as a radio signal over a wireless network. It efficiently uses spectrum which enables more people to share the airwaves.

CDMA2000
A digital wireless technology that provides a set of specifications which offer enhanced voice and data capacity. It is recognized by the ITU as a global standard for 3G wireless systems.

EDGE - Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution
A technology that provides GSM networks with the capacity to handle services for 3G and recognized by the ITU with data rates that are less than 100 Kbps.

EVDO
A radio channel technology that can provide both voice and data interoperation with the radio channel designed to transmit the maximum power/data transfer rate for each user as needed to transfer data by using a lower spreading gain.

GPRS - General Packet Radio Service
A non-voice, value-added service that allows information to be sent and received across a wireless phone network. The system can be upgraded to a GSM network to add packet-based technology to send and receive data and makes it possible for multiple users to share the same radio channel while providing the flexibility to toggle between an Internet connection and phone call.

GSM - Global System for Mobile Communications
The 2G technology is the standard for digital cellular telecommunications and provides circuit-switched data connections at 9.6 Kbps. It is the fastest growing wireless telecommunications technology in the world today.

Hot Spots
A location where a user can establish a WLAN or WiFi connection with its service provider.

HSDPA - High Speed Downlink Packet Access
The 3G technology for packet-based data service in W-CDMA downlink with data transmission up to 8-10 Mbps.

IS2000 - Interim Standard 2000
The 3G technology which is the standard for cellular networks that provide enhanced voice and data capacity.

ITU - International Telecommunications Union
An United Nations agency with the goal to establish standardized communications practices worldwide.

Mobitex
A network that is reliable but slow with connection speeds between 2 Kbps and 8 Kbps. It use to be the industry standard for wireless data communications with slow connections.

OFDM - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
A wireless communications technology and modulation technique in which available spectrum is divided into multiple RF channels which allows data streams to be transmitted simultaneously across multiple frequencies.

TDMA - Time Division Multiple Access
A digital wireless communications technology that divides traffic into specific time intervals or slots.

UMTS - Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service
A 3G technology that uses 10 MHz of wireless spectrum - a 5 MHz uplink and 5 MHz downlink to the mobile terminal and it recognized by the ITU.

WiFi - Wireless Fidelity or WLAN
A wireless Ethernet standard in the 2.4 GHz range.

WLAN - Wireless LAN
A local area network that transmits over the air typically in an unlicensed frequency.

WWAN - Wireless WAN
A carrier-based technology that allows for voice and data transfers with coverage in metropolitan areas and nationwide.
